Special Consideration for Teachers

Teachers are eligible for the International Teacher Identity Card (ITIC), which offers medical insurance coverage and limited discounts at theaters, museums, and accommodations, as well as for train, subway, ferry and airplane travel. Inquire about discounts, even if these are not posted, but be prepared to prove your teacher status.

For more information, consult the Identity Cards section of the International Student Travel Confederation website.

Teachers who are on a sabbatical leave, doing research in France, and who plan to stay for a period of time longer than three months will need a residency permit (carte de séjour) delivered by the local Préfecture of the département in which they will reside. This permit is obtained once in France. A proof of financial autonomy equivalent to 5,000 Francs a month (approximately US$1,000) will be required as well as confirmation that the teacher is involved in academic studies while in France.

A residency permit does not entitle the holder to work in France and be paid by a French organization. A number of scholarships, however, are awarded every year to selected candidates. Those who wish more information should inquire at the Cultural Services of the French Embassy of the country in which they reside.
