Special Consideration for Students
Students who are planning to stay more than three months in France need a Student Visa (visa d'étudiant), delivered by the nearest Consulate General of France, as well as a residency permit (carte de séjour) delivered by the local Préfecture of the département in which the student will reside. This permit is obtained once the student is in France. A proof of financial autonomy equivalent to 5,000 Francs a month (approx. US$1,000) will be required as well as confirmation that the student is enrolled in a recognized educational institution.
Students are not allowed to work and may not obtain a work permit. However there are a number of small jobs that a foreign student can legally do without a permit. For example, a student can work in an organization related to the area of his or her studies as long as it is part of the required curriculum. Such work can be paid, though. To know more about studies in France, check the guide des études en France.
A number of scholarships (bourses) are awarded every year to foreign students. These may cover in part or in full, expenses related to travel to France, living and studying, as well as medical insurance. The candidates are selected by the Cultural Services of the French Embassy of the country in which the student reside.
Student and youth travelers are often eligible for discounts at sights, theaters, museums, and accommodations, as well as for train, subway, ferry and airplane travel. Youth and student travelers should always inquire about discounts, even if they are not posted. Be prepared to prove your youth or student status.
The International Student Identity Card (ISIC) is the most widely accepted form of student identification, and can be purchased cheaply by eligible applicants (those who are at least 12 years of age and seeking a degree from a secondary or post-secondary institution).
ISIC membership offers a number of benefits and discounts, such as a toll-free Traveler's Assistance Hotline with multilingual staff who assist in medical, legal and financial emergencies, and an Accident Insurance with no daily limit. Through its partner organizations, long term residency permits as well as limited work permits can be obtained for qualifying students.
